Divorce Coping Skills
When you are in the midst of separation/divorce it is important that you stay in touch with your mind and body in order to take care of yourself. Especially if you have children, you need to do whatever you can to make this transition easier for you. There are things you can do.
Get rid of extra anxiety and depression
You can get rid of extra anxiety and depression though physical exercise. We all know about the hormones that our brain releases when we exert ourselves so it comes as no surprise that stress management calls for some form of physical exertion.
Walking is an especially good way to begin exercising
Start off slow and then build up your pace so that you raise your heart rate but can still talk while walking. Use your arms for extra benefit. Walk for at least 20 minutes. Go for more. Head up a hill. The more stressed out, the more movement you need. Whatever form of exercise you decide upon is fine…just do it! If you have any health problems then consult your Doctor first.
Do some simple relaxation exercises
Take a few minutes to simply breathe in and out deeply. Then return to normal breathing but with your concentration solely on the breaths. Don’t worry if your mind races back and forth. Just return your concentration to the breathing. Try it for 5 minutes twice a day and then see if you can increase the time.
Take up yoga
Go to a meditation class. Go somewhere where you can really scream! Let it out. It works! Get support from family and friends. Don’t isolate yourself. Join a divorce support group. Have a couple of really good friends with whom you can be open and honest.
Reconnect to your spiritual side or find it for the first time!
